Korean Hallyu Spotlight – Kim Ha Neul

Kim Ha Neul

 Blessed with beautiful skin and ooh so wonderful legs, Kim Ha Neul is another South Korean actress to watch for.  Although, i haven’t heard of her before, I only came to know how good she is on her latest Kdrama “A gentleman’s dignity” but before that, she had starred in numerous films and television drama since she started her career in 1998.

Considered as Queen of Romantic-comedies, her portrayal in 2011 “You’re my Pet” and 2004 “Too Beautiful to Lie”, makes me more interested about this ooh, sexy lady.

Her portrayal on 2011 movie “Blind” created a different impression and confirmed that she is one good actress that can portray different roles given to her. No wonder she won two best actress award (Grand Bell and Blue Dragon Film Awards) for this movie.

She has also done several modelling and endorsements.

At this time, i have watched four of her works but i am looking forward on watching her other movies and television drama .

 Im Yoon Ah (Im Yun A) was also called as goddess by her fans.  No wonder, because this 22 years petite lady is indeed a beauty.   She’s a south korean actress, model and supporting vocalist, visual, lead dancer and rapper of the girl band, Girls Generation or more popularly known as SNSD.

Aside from being a successful singer and dancer, she has given her fair share of acting in different KDrama and learning the facts, she’s the one who had appeared in more kdrama than her other band mates and received awards for her role in You are my destiny.

When I first watched her portrayal in Love Rain, i initially thought that she’s not meant for the drama, she’s so soft and her actions are a little bit smooth.  I believe that she has more to give but she was not able to give it well but in fairness to her, she gives justice to her roll especially on the next succeeding episodes.  Her beautiful face and smooth voice captured my heart and she was able to deliver her character well.

The Last Scandal of my Life-Remembering Cho Jin-Sil

I have already seen the dvd a dozen time but the picture doesn’t really interests me so i skipped buying it but when i’m searching about some of the best Korean Dramas, The Last Scandal of my Life appears on different sites as one of the Best Korean Dramas of 2008 and that interests me and sparks my curiosity to watch it.

The Kdrama evolves on the story of a happy go lucky but with a strong personality, housewife “Hong Sun-hee” who lives her life supporting her daughter because her husband was always not at home and tricks her to get a divorce so he can marries a richer woman because of his ranking debt.  Hong Sun Hee accidentally meets her classmate and first love , Jang Dong-chul (Jung Joon Ho) who happens to be a well known actor who pretends that he is on his early 30′s.

Because she needed money for her to support her daughter, she accepted the job of being a nanny in Song Jae-bin’s house and this is the time were they realized that there is still love in their hearts,  even after 20 years.  But just like in any other drama, it is not always happy times, there were a scene when a former love of Song Jae Bin appears and try to threaten their relationship by telling the truth that Xun  was indeed Jae Bin son. The drama ends well where Song Jae-bins eventually fight for his love and Hong Sun Hee accepted him and they were eventually married.

The Last Scandal of My Life

Many commented that the drama starts low and the actress, Cho Jin Sil overly acted on the first few scenes.  I guess, there are some scene that the actors did not really shine but if you would watch the drama from beginning to it’s end, you will appreciate it and will eventually felt something.

I have read that the drama was very successful and talks were made to have a second season or what we called part II but an unexpected event happened wherein actress, Cho Jin-Sil takes her on life and committed suicide on the bathroom of her own room where she shares with her mother and her two children.

On a personal level, it makes me sad to learn that a talented actress and a struggling mother of two would eventually end her life because of public ridicule and defamation that causes her great pressure and stress. I believe that Cho Jin-Sil is a victim of an old society who believes that single mom is not capable of being strong.   According to Times, Cho Jin-Sil Choi spoke openly on the taboo topic and sought to change the unpopular public perception of single moms in South Korea. “Korean society does not like strong women, and thinks single moms have a personality disorder,” says Park Soo Na, a national entertainment columnist.”

The news said that Choi had killed herself “in a momentary impulse”  because of great pressure and broken heart because of the rumors that spread all over the net that her good friend, Ahn Jae Hwan killed himself because he was not able to pay his debt were netizens says that Choi was the cause of this death because he was  indeed a loan shark which driven a fellow actor, Ahn Jae Hwan, to kill himself.

A very sad truth if I may say, Choi is considered as Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts of South Korea having done numerous movies and television acting.  For 20 years, she was he country’s cinematic sweetheart and as close to being a “national” actress but this ended when she was found dead hanging on her bath tub on October 2, 2008. But before her death, she suffered for four years finding her tracks on showbiz after her divorce, because many companies were still reluctant to give prominent roles to single mother.

With her beautiful performance on this Kdrama, she won , 2008 MBC Broadcasting Award: Best Contribution Award and Drama Series Top Excellence Award for Actress  wherein she was not able to receive personally because of her untimely death.

I could never imagine that Korea would be as sensitive and closed on the issue of single parents considering the fact that they allow divorce on their law.  If they really value the family, or having a complete family, they would have never allow divorce in the first place but I always have a soft opinion regarding divorce.  For me, if the marriage could not really work and you are being beaten (like what had happened to Cho Jin-Sil)  it is just a right attitude to seek on your own, a family that will love you no matter what. it is just too sad that a beautiful , talented and strong woman would just eventually become weaker because of a story that should not be talked in the first place.

Divorce has been a major talk in the Philippines for so long, people are still having second thoughts on accepting it and I guess, there are many conservatives that still don’t believe about divorce.

The suicide of Cho Jin-Sil is indeed the last scandal of her life.  True sad because unlike on the story of her KDrama  which gives her a happy ending, her life ends with problems, dismay, frustrations that lead to her death.

Yohio- Japanese music teen sensation is not a girl

Yohio , a 16 years old swedish boy turned singer dresses like a japanese doll but he is not even a japanese and he is not a girl but a boy.

Describing himself as a “bishonen” – a Japanese word meaning “beautiful youth (boy)”, he  was proud of  his doll-like features and no wonder many japanese teenage girl  adore him.

Although, the fact that he was a western, his love for japanese was born when he was introduced to anime at the age of 10 and since then, he loved to dress like one.  That’s the same reason why he was so fluent in japanese language and was able to sing  japanese song well.

He started in the Swedish Visual Kei band called Seremedy  and he was discovered and signed to Universal Music Japan and the rest is history.

Whitney Houston dead at 48

It was a shocking news, Pop music queen Whitney Houston was found dead at 48  today in one of the rooms of  Beverly Hilton Hotel.  Her majestic career was ended with erratic behavior , drug use and failed marriage to fellow singer Bobby Brown.

News claim that officials rushed to the room on the fourth floor of Beverly Hilton Hotel  where she was staying as a guest and  found security staff and firemen attempting to revive her using CPR.  The attempts proved unsuccessful after 20 minutes and she was pronounced dead at exactly 3:555 pm.  Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of her death and it was still unclear whether her death was drug related as many speculated considering her status and past problems.

Her death will be a great loss on the U.S music industry as well as to the world.  At her peak, she was considered as one of the world’s best selling artist,  from 1980 to late 1990′s her song echoes and gave inspiration and joy to every listener including this writer.  She wowed audiences with powerful, effortless, and peerless vocals that only few singers could achieved.

Her music and style influenced many younger generation of singers including Mariah Carey whom she worked with and recorded the Oscar-winning song When You Believe  in 1998.

Houston was supposed to appear at the gala of longtime mentor Clive Davis on his annual concert and dinner on saturday.  She had been at rehearsals for the show , couching singers Brandy and Monica, representative says that the show will proceed and will probably becomes a tribute for her.

It was a tragic fall for a great singer like Whitney Houston, she should have been reaping and enjoying the fruits of her fame being one of the  top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

The New York Times wrote that Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity.”

Her marriage to Bobby Brown was seen odd by many, she was seen as pops pure princess while he was a bad boy , Bobby Brown was arrested for several times because of misdemeanor.  Whitney once quoted,  ” When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place,” she told Rolling Stone in 1993. “You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that’s their image. It’s part of them, it’s not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody’s angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy.”

Many years , the public saw what she once proclaimed, Houston was rehab two times saying that she was recovered but eventually missed concert dates and a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns,  Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963, according to Guiness World of Record , she was the most awarded female act of all time. Houston made her album debut in 1985  which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. Saving All My Love for You brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal, multiplatinum album came out in 1987 hits like Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody were included.

Her moving 1991 rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America’s sweetheart. In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with The Bodyguard. Despite mixed reviews the movie was an international success. It gave her success including her rendition of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You, sat atop the charts for weeks and hailed as  Grammy’s record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the Bodyguard soundtrack was named album of the year.

Her downfall was very sudden but because of people love for her she managed to return in the limelight, she was forgiven and accepted again but this second chance proved futile as she once again failed to fully comprehend that her life is more precious.

Whitney Houston is just one of the story of famous people who was defeated by their own sorrowful mistakes and addiction to drugs.  She will surely be missed by her family, friends and colleagues but her music will undoubtedly remain.

Rooney Mara- Teenage beauty to freaking hot

Petite, simple and pretty, that’s the best word to describe this picture of a young lady.  Rooney Mara was once known with her

I could not imagine the transformation they made for her to become the lead actress in 2011 movie starring Daniel Craig ” The girl with the dragon tattoo” .  How would you react if you see a girl with beautiful locks and pretty smile turned in front of you naked with fierce and tattooed body?

I bet my grandma will surely raise her eyebrows.  I have not dared having a tattoo  even i wanted , when she was still alive because I am afraid that might she had an early heart attack.

Honestly, I don’t have the guts to change my image that’s why I really admire the guts of this girl, doing all this transformation for her movie and eventually to boost her career in Hollywood.  After all, we are talking Hollywood here and what she does has really paid off.  She was even ranked No. 3 in Askmen (online magazine) 99 Women of 2012.

Obviously her transformation is a huge success and she even had her first Oscar nomination,  but this lady claims that she’s not comfortable with it,

She says she needed to  overhauled her wardrobe because she “stopped feeling comfortable” in her everyday clothes.

“My wardrobe has completely changed. It had to, partly because of my hair and partly because I stopped feeling comfortable in what I used to wear,” she told Britain’s Style magazine.

But who is Rooney Mara?

Well, that’s just a glimpse of what we will see from her.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a trilogy and with its first film a wide success, we are very sure that the director is already planning for the second installment.

3.  Han Ji Won – When I saw her at Secret Garden, i immediately told myself that this gal is too beautiful, not because of her pretty face but with the style and her acting.  No wonder, I was correct when I have learned that she is also the actress behind the  best korean drama,  Hwang Jin Yi and the ever sweet Love so Divine.

4. Son Ye Jin – One of the most highest paid actress of South Korea in 2011, Son Je Jin , I first remember her name at the very dramatic movie,  Lovers Concerto but her recent work is the ever bubbly korean drama Personal taste  with actor, Lee min Ho.  She’s a favorite in the world of CF.

Yoon Eun Hye  - Eun Hye is a singer and was later on turned into actress where she earn her right to be called as one of the youngest actresses in South Korea who belong to the A-Lister group or what they called, highest paid actor/actress.  She shine on her portrayal of a tomboy on 1st Shop, Coffee Prince but her first major break was on Princess hours (Goong).  She also made My Fair Lady and the recent Lie to Me.  Recently, her sexy poses for the magazine Dazed was the talked of the town.

6. Ji Hyun - Actress, model, she is also known as Gianna Jun.  She stars in the successful romantic comedy movie My Sassy Girl in 2001 wherein she won an acting award. She is included in the  highest paid actress in korea. My Sassy Girl became the 2nd  highest film selling in 2001 and highest grossing comedy film of all time.

7. Kim Tae Hee –  I  first saw her at Stairway to Heaven and told myself that I hate her,  why won’t I,  I envy her beautiful face, her lips that pouts unintentionally, her big /chinky eyes.  Her recent series is My princess and Iris.  She is also well loved in the world of commercial/CF. If there is one face that I would love to trade of, that would be Kim Tae Hee, truly a beauty.

8. Kim Su Ah – Big, Beautiful , that’s Kim sam Soon but this lady is not just big, she also had a big heart. Her determination to do the roll of Kim Sam Soon even if it means she needs to take extra big weight is totally cool.   Her recent series was the tear breaking, Scent of a woman.  Now, i wonder what will I do if i only had six months to live,  what do you think you’ll do then?

Song Hye Kyo

9. Song Hye Kyo – All In (2003)  Full House (2004), The World that they live in (2008) opposite to real life boyfriend Hyun Bin,  two best actress award.  This gorgeous lady is not intentionally put in the end of the list.  Not because she’s the girl of my oh favorite, Hyun Bin but because I believe her achievement in acting is quite not many compared from the actresses above.  But if this list would be about the Most Beautiful Korean Actresses, Song Hye Kyo would definitely be in my top list. I have never seen a face so fresh just like her and the skin, something every woman would be envy.

Park Shin Hye

10. Park shin Hye – I would never forget this girl.  Talented would be my first impression and when you see her korean series, you will know what I am talking about.  Although, I don’t really like her character in   Goong S (Prince Hour) I also felt that it was challenging. Her very good performance at Heartstring can melt once heart and her bubbly appearance at  He’s Beautiful will truly makes you laugh. Sometimes she was mistaken as Yoon Eun Hye because they have portrayed a similar tomboy style but when you got to see them , you will definitely distinguish how different they were from each other.  Maybe if they have something in common, that is , they are both a good singer, model, beautiful and talented.

Lee Dae Hae

11. Lee Dae Hae – My girl,   latest series  is Ms. Ripley, She was also seen in Fugitive, Plan B with Rain, East of Eden, Green Rose.  But I do remember that I first saw her at  Sweet 18 and I myself is an avid fan of that series. Those sweet eyes are a real charmer but her comment on Sweet Night, a KBS2TV variety show regarding Filipino English accent was a total turn off for every filipino .

Disclosure:  This list is based on my own favorites.  There are many korean actresses that are truly talented and I still have some few who really love but this eleven are among the best since most of their korean drama series was my favorite and was well loved by many fans too.

Different faces of Yoon Eun Hye

She’s gorgeous, a prime actress at her best. Yoon Eun Hye, born on October 3, 1984) is a South Korean actress, singer, entertainer and model. She debuted as a member of girl group Baby V.O.X at the age of 15, staying with the group from 1999 to 2005.

Yoon moved into acting in 2005  and landed a leading role in Princess Hours or Goong as Shin Chae-gyung, as well as The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, My Fair Lady and now the much awaited GMA Channel 7 Koreanovela, Lie to Me. 

Although her first acting role in Princess Hours made her famous in the world of drama acting, her next series The Vineyard Man which aired in 2006 gained less audience because of it’s big competitor Jumong but this won her not only “Best New Actress” in the 2006 KBS Drama Awards, but also “Best Actress” at 2006 Grime Awards along with Song Il Kook as the “Best Actor” .

The success of Coffee Prince made Yoon Eun Hye a sought actress not just in Korea but also in other Asian Countries and made her the highest paid actress , MBC paid her 20 million won per episode thus make her the youngest actress to join South Korea‘s A-list of stars, the 20 million Won Club which includes Bae Yong-joon, Kwon Sang Woo, Ko Hyun Jung, and Song Il kook.

She was crowned as “Drama Ratings Queen” by the media and netizens and because of this wide success she was sought by many endorsement leading her to be South Korea’s CF Queen.

With her success, Yoon Eun Hye never forget to help those in need, she does charity works and collaborated with Kim Hyun Joong of K-pop group SS501 for the Never Alone Campaign” for UNICEF to help African children. Proceeds from the sale of the “Never Alone” T-shirts go to help the needy in Africa.

In 2011, Yoon was back in the big screen after 5 years with the movie titled My Black Mini Dress, based on the same title.  The movie which opened in theatres on 24 March starts off in 2nd place at the box office.

Catch Yoon Eun Hye in Lie To me where she will be portraying “Gong Ah Jung” a bubbly girl.   The character was caught in a swirling scandal with a nobleman from an elite family after a most ridiculous lie.  Watch it at  GMA 7 this 2012.

Lee Min Ho stars in City Hunter – Featured Actor

South Korean Actor Lee Min Ho was best known for his leading role as F4 leader, Gu Jun Pyo in South Korean Drama Series, Boys Over Flower.  He also appears in the romantic comedy drama Personal Taste in 2010 and now in the upcoming ABS-CBN Koreanovela City Hunter.

Lee Min Ho was born in Heukseok-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, South Korea on June 22, 1987. (Wow, he is so young) His acting career started in 2006 but was put hold because of a serious car accident with his fellow actor and childhood friend Jung II Woo (My Fair Lady).  The major breakthrough in his career came in 2009 where he stars in Boys Over Flower along with actress Goo Hye Sun.  Boys Over Flower become a word of mouth and a major hit not just in Korea but also in other Asian Country, even in the Philippines.
